The beach itself is owned by local people, having been originally bought up by an action group in the 1950s to stop developers turning the area into a holiday complex. The owners raise the money needed to maintain the beach, water and on-site facilities (such as the Beach Café) through the car parking charges and it is a tribute to their hard work and community spirit that West Wittering has been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag for many years.

If you want to be active on your beach holiday, there is so much to do in the local area, including bird watching, walking, cycling, swimming, windsurfing, sailing and flying kites. You won't go hungry - there are some great places to eat, such as the Old House at Home pub and The Beach House restaurant in the centre of the village, and more choice further along the coast in neighbouring East Wittering. The beach at Bracklesham Bay (which extends eastwards from East Wittering) has a mixture of both sand and shingle and is especially popular with surfers, divers, windsurfers and paddle boarders as well as being a treasure trove for fossil hunters.
